Do only 20somethings like rap now in 2012?
I think a genre is "half dead" once it fails to be able to pick up new young fans, especially tweens and very young teens (like 9-14).
Obviously rap is still around, but I never see children and teens digging it much, it seems to be people in their 20s, and a few 30s. The thuggish gangsta stuff, and even the bling bling, really clashes with this tweenpop and autotune Gaga/Katy era. That's a jarring change from, say 2003, when tons of little kids were into Eminem and Fiddy.
That's probably why its going electropop now (i.e. Pitbull, Nicki Minaj), since its the only way to really bring it into today's music scene, even if its in a more watered down way. (The same thing happened when classic rock 60s/70s bands went more synthpop in the 80s early MTV era to survive.)
I honestly hope it becomes REALLY cheesy, stupid and outmoded soon. I can't wait until kids born in 2005 start ripping on clubbing rap music and making some 1990-born wiggers feel old and uncool. I'll get the last laugh since they'll finally understand how they've made ME feel by ripping on my classic rock and 80s/early 90s music!

Rap is awesome! No, not only people in their 20's listen to rap. I am 17 years old and I proudly listen to Rap/Hip Hop always. Eminem is my idol.
